What arrives

  2. 2Stretched on wooden bars and set in a solid hardwood floater frame, so the canvas sits just inside the wood with a shadow around it.
  3. 3The hanger is already fitted. It goes on the wall the day it lands.
  4. 4Packed flat-boxed and tracked. If it arrives damaged, send a photograph and it is replaced.

How Frantisek makes the originals

Frantisek photographs the model on a 4x5 camera with black and white film, develops the negative in the darkroom and scans it. In Photoshop he builds a collage from the portrait and images he has collected of landscapes, architecture and objects, then prints it as a digital negative at the size of the finished picture. Watercolour paper is soaked twice in a gelatin solution, dried for a day, and sensitized under dim light. The negative is contact printed onto it under ultraviolet light, leaving a faint image called the matrix. Then lithography inks in different colours are dabbed onto the whole surface with a stag-foot brush, layer upon layer like a tapestry, across three to four weeks.
