Practices for genuine growth

Updated: Jan 27

Practices for genuine growth

Practice serves as a necessary tool for refreshing our mindset and allowing for genuine growth. Whether or not we acknowledge it, we are consistently practicing. By following our ingrained patterns, we reinforce certain neural pathways and become “set in our ways.” Nevertheless, once we discontinue using old neural grooves, these pathways gradually disappear. Practice has the ability to generate new responses and expose rigid ones. It is through this process of challenging our ingrained ways that we can truly evolve and adapt.

It is interesting how practice is valued in various aspects of life such as sports, therapy, business, and creativity, yet often overlooked in spirituality. However, it holds even more significance in the spiritual realm than anywhere else. Understanding the importance of consistent spiritual practice is crucial for growth and development in this area.

We should be aware that mindless repetition of any practice without a clear purpose can lead to unconsciousness. It is essential for practices to continually challenge and inspire us, fostering new perspectives and growth.

Routine repetition can result in a lack of awareness, hindering genuine consciousness and spiritual development. If spirituality doesn’t foster real growth in both inner and outer freedom, then it isn’t authentic.

Although Divine gifts are freely given, only those who genuinely seek and accept them receive them. That is the symbiotic nature of grace. Divine Love respects the autonomy of each person, never resorting to manipulation or pressure. Love patiently waits for an invitation and desire, and only then does it rush in.

Love Prevails

There isn’t a remedy except the refuge into love,

for the anguish of delicately tormented souls.

In this unpredictable universe, we are vulnerable and helpless.

How will we discover the origin of the Universe?

When personal insight has exceeded time,

there is another world that reveals the essence of our being.

Be intoxicated with Love, since love is all that prevails;

it is love and the lover that exists forever—

don’t extend your soul to everything else; all else is an illusion.

Embrace the soul that is consumed by nothing else.

Longer term Nelson residents may recall the name Derwyn Costinak. For about 10 years -- in his 30's & 40's -- he ministered at Nelson's Pentecostal Church. Now -- in his early 50's -- Derwyn lives in Calgary, shepherding a more 'progressive & liberal flock'. And, in his 'spare time', Derwyn has just finished teaching a 12-session course titled: Life, the Universe & Everything: Exploring the Christian Faith.

After reading Frantisek & Chantal's words above, it struck me that they could have been written by Derwyn, in the…
